0Skill trees, combat and exploration illustrated in 90+ minutes of Dying Light gameplay footage
More than 90 minutes of Dying Light gameplay footage, shown during a recent stream/chat session by Techland, are now available to watch for those who missed the event or are just keen on a re-watch.
The video shows off the Old Town section of the city devastated by a viral outbreak which has turned most of its inhabitants into zombies, and sees the player attempting to complete several while on a mission to acquire some weapon modifications. This entails locating the gunsmith Rupert, finding some insulin for a girl at that location and attempting to defeat a “troll” disturbing the peace of the neighbourhood.
Safe houses need to be first cleared before they can be used, and they are useful to stash items, trade, or just sleep until day/night. We also learn that night time in the game lasts for around seven minutes, and the footage demonstrates that time is sufficient to induce much tension as payers must try to survive and get to a safe house while the more dangerous zombies come out at night.
For the first time, we also get an in-depth look at the three skill trees: acquiring abilities in Survivor lets you craft lock picks, Molotov Cocktails, Firecrackers (which can be thrown to distract/attract the undead) and Shuriken (including elemental effect ones which cause exploding, freezing or burning damage); Barter and Haggle are extremely useful in trade with others survivors; Booster lets you create the titular item that allows one to temporarily move faster, see better at night and beef up their damage resistance; one can also expand their inventory space by acquiring Backpack-related talents while other talents let you construct traps (electrical fences/exploding cars etc), shields and the Grappling Hook (a useful item that lets you move around faster but has a short cooldown), use zombie parts to temporarily camouflage yourself and so on.
The second major tree is that of Agility, and it is all about enhancing your parkour skills, including sliding, vaulting over enemies, tackling, grappling and dropkicking them, moving, mantling and climbing faster, regenerating health to a higher level after sustaining damage, and more. The final skill tee is that of Combat, with skills including Stun, Kick Stun, Sturdiness (Toughness), Melee Throw (throw melee weapons at opponents), Multi-Throw (Target up to three enemies with throwable weapons), Power Attack, Conserve Weapons (increase weapon durability), Stomp (a finisher for enemies down on the ground), Ground Pound (a move executed while in mid-air to strike the ground to topple enemies), Drop Attack and Windmill (a 360-degree attack to damage multiple enemies).
