0DICE details Levolution, Dynamic Ocean Combat, other features in the next generation Frostbite 3 engine
DICE – developers of the upcoming multiplayer-oriented FPS Battlefield 4 – have sent forth the following video to expand on and detail the features of their next generation Frostbite 3 engine, which is being used to power the game. Frostbite 3 grants the game designers much more freedom in constructing environments on a superior scale, intensifying the experience and helping further blur the line between the game and reality.
It allows for dynamic destructible environments on vast battlefields including damage caused by the player, potentially resulting in game-changing scenarios and providing the player with an increased amount of freedom. Features like Emotion Capture, enhanced lighting, ambient physics and improved animations all further intensify the experience, allowing for more realistic characters and environments, visible in simple things like trees swaying in the wind.
Technical Artist Andy Klein talks about the addition of network water simulation allowing for dynamic ocean combat; for example, a jet crashing into the ocean causes waves, impacting objects on the water nearby. Higher audio fidelity also further improve immersion, whether you are charging through the explosive chaos of a battlefield with bullets whizzing past or just listening to ambient sounds.
