One of my favourite titles revealed at E3 this year in Los Angeles was Ubisoft’s online open-world RPG The Division, which takes place in a Tom Clancy universe and is being created by Massive Entertainment (those behind World in Conflict) for the Xbox One and PS4 with an estimated release window of 2014. The game is set in New York just weeks after a lethal virus has devastated the city and its infrastructure, resulting in the transition to chaos. The President subsequently issues a directive activating The Division, a covert elite unit of tactical agents deployed to act independently in an emergency scenario.
Promising diverse locales from the vast subway network to the iconic Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and everything in between, the open-world nature of the game allows for mucho exploration, while the RPG elements of player progression ensure there are various skills to choose from and abilities and items to employ. The concept is extremely fascinating, and the gameplay shown, if it indeed translates to a similar seamless experience in the online world, is bound to raise the bar for online games. It’s always great to see a surprise title coming out of nowhere promising to revolutionise the genre; here’s to hoping Ubisoft is able to follow through on its promise.
